18 August 1908 — Castel Savoia, Gressoney St. Jean
Tuesday. 18th [August 1908]. Rose refreshed & had breakfast at 8 in my sitting room, but took it easy & did not dress very early. Pss Strongoli came to pay me a visit before lunch & to talk over her charities at Naples & to ask after ours at Venice. The Queen came down at 12 & took my arm to go into lunch & the same coming out of the dining room & then we sat in the glass veranda & talked while the Court ladies did crochet work. Abt 3 Senatore Blaserna came to call on H.M. & sat in front with the ladies chatting & I retired to the work table. At 4 the Queen rose & we all retired to our apartments till 5.30 when we again assembled at tea wh is served on a small round table in the bow window in the dining room. No servants are present & Css Mimi makes the tea so that every one is at their ease & the Queen talks familiarly with us all. We took a walk afterwards with all the 9 dogs & met a big black newfoundland which attached itself to us & came solemnly with the party. The Queen took me to see the laundry wh is in a separate house, also 2 houses for bachelor’s quarters & a large one for the men servants & secretaries & stewards– We dined after 8 & in the evening sat by the fire of big logs for a while & then the Q. went to the big centre table to read & talk to her ladies & I watched Mimi playing patience till bed time.
