20 August 1908 — Castel Savoia, Gressoney St. Jean
Thursday. 20th [August 1908]. I walked a little way up the hill in the morning before lunch—sat in the sun & repeated Italian poetry. A very distinguish man came to lunch Father Senserina                who was very interesting. He was apparently liberal minded, & had travelled a great deal– Knew literary men of all countries & spoke French well—understands & reads English & knows many literary Englishmen. The conversation turning upon Assyriology the Queen explained to him that I was Henry’s wife & his surprise & pleasure was very gratifying. He spoke of the late Pan Anglican Congress with interest & admiration & of the Encyclical & the Q. was so interested that I offered to send to England for the pamphlet containing it. In the afternoon Prof: Giacosa arrived to stay at this Castle. He is a prof: of chemistry, a stout dark man with a fine head & black beard & very bald.
