1 September 1908 — Castel Savoia, Gressoney St. Jean
Tuesday. 1st September [1908]. No walk this morning wrote letters. It began to rain after lunch & we despaired about going out when luckily after 5 it cleared & every cloud disappeared. We had tea at 5.30 & then went off in motor up the valley to Gressoney la Trinity past the Hotel Miravalle which is the furthest house we can see from the windows here. It is very picturesque but more wild than this part of the valley. In the Q’s motor besides her were the sposi Guiccioli, Ma Villamarina & myself. We were driven by the Director of the Garage the Captain. When we got to the furthest hotel we turned round & came back as far as Gabrinus where we got out & walked back to the Castle arriving when it was quite dark at 8.15. We dined at 9. I played patience with Pss Strongoli. The Guiccioli sposi, Blaserna & Genl Allason gathered round the Q & talked till she rose & we went to bed at 11.30.
