5 September 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 5th [September 1908]. Very done up when I woke & was afraid I was going to be ill—but I dragged myself out of bed early & got better as the day went on. The Guest party appeared abt 9.30 & took me in their steam launch to see their yacht wh arrived yesterday. The rest of their party had not come on board the “Norseman” which was lying next the D. of Westminster’s yacht. The Guests sat down to a hearty breakfast at wh I merely looked on. Then as they were all being settling themselves & it began to rain at 11 I took leave of them & took the gondola on to the Hospital to pay a short visit there. Found all in apple pie order & Sister Chaffey very busy. She took me round & then insisted on giving me some beef tea wh she served daintily on a tray with a rose laid by the plate. At 12 I hurried home & there found Clara Montalba waiting to see me– She sat & talked till 1 when Sister Chaffey came & lunched with me & went with me to the station & I started by the 2.10 train for Belluno. There was a tremendous thunderstorm as we came up the valley but it luckily cleared before I got to Belluno at 6. The Edens old gondolier Federigo met me with the Edens carriage & at 6.30 I was inside their hospitable roof & having a comforting cup of tea. We dined at 7.30 & went to bed at 9.30 of wh I was glad as I was a good deal done up.
