28 November 1908 — San Antonio Palace, Malta
Saturday. 28th November [1908]. A most lovely day—not a breath of wind—rather cold, almost frosty—& a very hot sun. We lunched at 1 & directly afterwards drove off in the 2 motors to the Marsa to be present at the pony races wh began at 2. There were not many people there when we arrived punctually as the 1st race was about to begin—but the different naval & military officers began to arrive & soon there were a good many people in the enclosure. The D. & Dss took up places close to the judges’ box & from there saw the 1st races, walking afterwards about to talk to different people. Once or twice they went up to the stand to see the race from there—& once we went to see the saddling in the paddock. Myles rode one of the ponies in the 2nd race but was no where– His own poney came in 2nd in another, much to his disappointment. Before the last race tea was served in the room behind the Royal Box to wh the Govr & Lady Ward came & also a few others invited by the Connaughts such as Lady Meriweather & Mrs Biancardi. The sun had set before the last race was over & the Duchess hurried off for fear of getting cold as soon as it was finished. Miss Pelly & Capt. Bulkeley dined in town– The Duke & Dss, Myles & I dined together & directly after dinner we went off to Valletta to the Mansel Theatre to see the Opera “Siberia” which was very badly sung & a very dismal subject– The music also was unpleasing & full of discords & minor keys. It was a short opera & we got back to San Antonio soon after 11– Had hot soup wh was ready prepared for us in the Duchess’ sitting room & then to bed–
