22 April 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 22nd [April 1909]. Busy morning selling tickets for the concert. The Canon Ragg is staying here & he took the Bishop out. I went to the station directly after lunch to see the last batch of profughi leave Venice. Oscar Guest accompanied me. There were 60 to leave & they were accompanied by Signor Cataldo who is to deposit them safely in their villages. The poor things were in a great state of delight and excitement. I am afraid it will not be at all as pleasant for them when they get there & they have a 3 days’ journey before them. They were all closely packed together in 3rd class carriages. They shake hands with those of the committee & dragged us into the carriages to give us their last thanks & many were sad because they knew they shd never see us more. All shook hands & when the train moved away they cheered lustily & so ends an episode of our life. On my return home I went to Pal. Mocenigo where we paid a visit to Css Wallis Mocenigo the owner of it who had arranged the old Palace with great taste & then at 4.30 many people came to tea to see the Bishop.
