16 March 1910 — Rome | |
Wednesday. 16th [March 1910]. Had a quiet morning till lunch time writing letters. After lunch I had a R. motor car & went out to see P. & Pss Bülow at their Villa Malta close by this Palace. The Pss was at the door as I drove up with another lady to whom she was showing the house. Donna Laura Minghetti was sitting out in the garden taking a siesta in a sheltered corner so we did not disturb her but the Princess took us over the whole house even to the terraces on the top of the house. It was built by a Russian Ct Bobinsky without sparing of expense. The wood work & panelling was done by workmen who came expressly from England—there are enormous fine doors & chimney pieces—& splendid suites of apartments. The Pss took us even into her husbands rooms where we found the Prince at work with his secretary. He received us most cordialy & seemed jolly & looked well. Next to his study was a room that has served for ironing the Russian Count’s trousers!– I chaffed the Prince on the subject & said I now understood why he had insisted on buying the Villa as he was such a dandy himself. The Princess has arranged the house quite charmingly having such wonderfully good taste wh she inherits from her mother. After we had been all over the villa we returned to the hall & went out in the garden where I found Donna Laura had finished her siesta & I sat out there talking to her till after 5 when I took her back to her own house in my royal motor & leaving her there returned to the Palace. Had tea in my salon & worked till dinner time. Then went down at about 8.20 in the lift to the Queen’s apartments. | |
