5 April 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 5th [April 1910]. Had usual reception in evening—but few people came as there was a roller-skating party at Css Morosini’s & a dinner in honor of the Duke of Abruzzi. One of the peculiarities of the society of this place is that knowing that on some evengs of the week a lady always receives her friends, they chose that very time to give a reception themselves in order to avoid asking her. They know not what “usage du monde” means. I was saying this to Angela & she said they have here often begged me to tell you that they do not care to go to your house for 3 reasons—1—you do not allow smoking. 2 you don’t have card playing. 3 you don’t warm your house eno’. I told Angela I should be glad if she would let those ladies know that if they wish to make such terms for the benefit of giving me their society I was glad that they should remain at home. I have plenty of friends of my own.
