22 October 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 22nd [October 1910]. Had a visit from a Prof.                a priest from Venice who is trying to collect funds for a female technical school & who talked long & much about it hoping to get money out of me. I managed to put him off & then he went on to talk of literature & Assyrian art & of Henry’s work in that direction & I ended in lending him the Italian translation of Nineveh & we parted better friends then I could have supposed from the beginning of the interview. In the afternoon Eda & I went over to the Hospital & then I went to call on Mrs Goff who is staying in the Hultons house at SS Zanipolo. Afterwards went to Hugh Whitakers to meet Mrs Bob Lyttleton daughter of Santley the singer & we had some pleasant music. She being a wonderful musician. She accompanied Hugh W’s violin playing which is not bad—also Mr Emmerson’s singing & another young man J. W. Olton, who has a pretty tenor voice & also wishes to take up singing as a profession. I asked all the party to come to tea with me on Monday wh they agreed to do. Nela went to the Fenice it being the opening night, with the Hillmans. Eda & I had a quiet evening at home & played patience.
