17 November 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 17th [November 1910]. While I was out yesterday afternoon Lord Kitchener left a card on me having came from Rome. I sent him a note asking him to come to luncheon– He was very kind to me & I lunched with him at Calcutta & I wanted to return his civility. He came to lunch today & was very friendly. Finding that he is staying alone at the Grand Hotel & will remain a week I pressed him to move quarters & to stay with me which he agreed to do. Mr Montalba came to lunch to meet him & also Hugh Whitaker. Mr Brown came afterwards to take him out sightseeing. Lord K. returned to dinner. In the evening we got out a puzzle in which he took great interest in piecing together with the help of Eda & Nela. It is a curious mania of the times—a picture pasted on a thin layer of wood is cut out into innumerable small pieces & one works at them till the picture is revealed– It is all to no good & has to be broken up at once & put away. Kitchener is a powerfully built man—rather brusque in manner—tall & commanding in his way (unconsciously). We all rather tremble before him.
