7 December 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 7th [December 1910]. Went at 10.30 to the Arbibs to see Bianca the eldest daughter married to a Mr Nahum of Tripoli. There were many Jews assembled. The ceremony was performed in the drawing room by the Rabbi—all, of course, putting on their hats! It struck me that the nasal chant of the rabbi today & that of the priest at Armida’s funeral were much the same & were evidently imported from the East. During the service the bridegroom got so nervous that he cried bitterly. The bride was calm but pale. After the ceremony wine was handed round & we drank to the health of the couple. Then cups of chocolate came—& the sugared almonds of which we carried off some. I got home about 1. In the evening to the Sailor’s concert which was very full & successful.
