Thursday. 9th [November 1911]. We all 4—Nela, Eda, Daphne Darley & I went in the afternoon to tea with the Humphrey Johnstons at Madonna dell’Orto, where we met most of the English Colony. Had the news by “Daily Mail” we received today that Balfour has resigned the leadership of the Conservative party—an unexpected bomb! He has long been so weak I doubt we shall miss him. | |
