23 November 1911 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 23rd [November 1911]. I went to see the Edens in the afternoon & walked home from their house– Passing down the Calle 22 Margo I met Berovich Pasha, he who had been governor in Crete & had run away when there was the revolt in wh the Cretans declared their independence. I had asked him more than a year ago if he knew anyone connected with the Sultan Abdul Hamid in his exile. He said his ex ADC was here now. I said I should be glad, if possible, to send a message to the poor old Sultan to express my sympathy & say I had not forgotten his kindness to me in old days. Well today Berovich said that he had intended calling to see me to tell me that the ADC had written to tell him that he had at last been able to convey my message thro’ the gardener & that the Sultan had expressed great pleasure & gratitude & said that his only joy was to think he is not entirely forgotten by everyone. Poor man!
