5 January 1912 — Cairo | |
Friday. 5th [January 1912]. We went off to the museum in the morning escorted by Sir George Arthur & preannounced by Lord Kitchener to the curator. However being Friday the holiday here he was not there but we were pilotted by a nice little French underling who was most kind & polite. As the Museum closes at 12 we walked home at that hour. After lunch I remained at home. Eda went off to the Bazaars with Sir G. Arthur & returned at 4—just then Lord K. came out of his office & invited me to take a turn on the terrace in the garden & we walked up & down by the Nile. He said he had little time to himself or for exercise as he had so many people to see & so much to do as things here had been so neglected during the last 4 years as Sir E. Gorst had done nothing, but that he hoped he should get more time to himself as things got more settled. He said that unfortunately he could not get as much exercise as was necessary on acct of his leg which often pained him. I then began to talk of plans & how I had intended to go to Luxor next Thursday when he himself went off to meet the King on his return from India. Lord K. said I must return here when he does & make our final departure from here to Rome wh I agreed to do. He told me also that he wants me to go & visit the Khedive’s mother who had hitherto been unfriendly to English people but is now more enclined towards us. The sun began to get lower & we then turned towards the house. I remarked on the lovely roses growing in the garden & he said it had been much neglected & he hoped to improve it & explained to me certain alterations he intended making. Truly he is a wonderful man—interested in the smallest detail. We came in—it was 5 oclock & tea time. Sir George Arthur dined out. We had a quiet evening. | |
