1 February 1912 — Luxor | |
Thursday. 1st February [1912]. Had a quiet day. Recd a telegram from Capt. FitzGerald cancelling his letter saying we could come to Cairo on account of the Princess Royal being expected at the Agency. I had all the friends to tea here, the Masperos, Guadalmina, Joanot, Antitch, Whymper. It was a tremendously hot day & there were signs of storms in the sky. Mrs Barton (wife of Barton Pasha) also came to tea– Her husband (head of the post office) is at Assouan & being there had been commissioned by Lord Kitchener to make all the necessary arrangements for the Fife funeral– He writes to his wife that it is very difficult to get the Princess to decide & keep to any arrangements– He has had the body embalmed & is bringing it down by train—arriving here tomorrow morning. Later in the evening I received another telegram from Capt. FitzGerald begging us to go to Cairo after all on Saty as the Princess would not be there till 12th to 14th. So we decided to do this– Abt 7 p.m. a great sandstorm came on. | |
