26 June 1912 — Chateau Le Muette, Paris
Wednesday. 26th [June 1912]. I sent off Baker in the morning to fetch Corise from Hotel Bristol to come & spend the day with me. She arrived about 11 & I took her out to walk round the park of the house. It is what remains of the time of Louis XV & is delightfully shady with 3 large avenues of trees leading towards the Bois de Boulogne & the garden on the other side. Unfortunately it was showery so we had to sit well under the trees to keep dry. We lunched at 12.30 & Nevil Gordon & her brother Lord Stanmore came to that meal. The Count went out directly afterwards & we 5 sat in the salon talking. The talk soon became that of politics & Sophy addressed us as to the evils of our present Govt & how Lloyd George is working to put class against class—so excited did Sophy get that at last she burst into tears & we were in dismay. I believe her to be right but I hope that the good sense of the nation may pull us thro’ these bad times tho’ I am heavy at heart to see the prestige of England going rapidly down down. Later Sophy took Corise & me to call on her step daughter Mme d’Arcy & Mme Franqueville & we returned to the Château to tea to which several of Sophy’s friends came—after wh Corise left us & returned to Paris. At a little before 7 Sophy took Baker & me in her motor to the Gare de Lyons where she put us into the Simplon Express & took leave of us. We left at 7.45 for Venice.
