4 August 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Monday. 4th [August 1862]. I got up pretty early as B, Con, Ecca & Schr all went off by the 7½ A M. train. The children for London & to stay with Maria—Schr to Cheltenham– At abt 12 oclock we all started for Bournemouth where Monties yacht “Lark” lay. We picked up Lady Louisa Ponsonby on the way & she also came to see us off. When we got to Bourne we found Arthur & the yacht waiting– After getting a game and some work at the reading room we went to the end of the pier where the “gig” was waiting for us. FEB felt very much inclined to turn back but I would not let her & jumped first into the gig. Kate came with us and as it was very rough we felt the motion so that we were inwardly persuaded that we should be very ill. Kate immediately returned to shore & we set off. We were 7 in all besides skippers viz. Mrs Bertie—Ivor—Montie—Arthur—Uncle B—Cecil Alderson & myself. I had not been on board 20 mins before I was sick but immediately had some champagne and laid myself flat down on deck under a rug. Between being alternately sick and asleep the time past till we arrived at Cowes where we anchored and had dinner. Once Montie thought he would cure me with a mixture of brandy—salvolatile and essence of ginger—as it was quite “neat” & I took a good sip of it, it nearly burnt my inside out and I resolved never to take medicine administered in that promiscuous sort of way. Of course I was not well eno’ to go down to dinner, but had it brought up to me. But as I was sick 3 times during the meal I did not much enjoy it. I slept like a top. We landed at Cowes and Montie got me a corduroy jacket & himself a hat– Cowes is a rather pretty place built with curious little crooked streets—and in the yatching season is at its height—it is very full– We had hard & small but nice little beds.
