5 August 1862 — Cowes | |
Tuesday. 5th [August 1862]. We got up at about 8 & went ashore to bathe– The bathing is rather good as one is so soon in deep water. We then returned to breakfast and dressed ourselves. (Arthur accompanied us ashore and was much scandalized by the absence of all crinoline)– I was obliged to breakfast on deck as I could not stand the stuffy cabin. We sailed to Ryde where we all disembarked & went to luncheon at the Pier Hotel. While lunch was preparing we went for a walk in the town to get some shoes for Montie. The town is larger & the streets wider that those of Cowes but to my thinking not so nice– We then sailed on to Spithead by St Helens and then back to Cowes for the night. I had my dinner in my cabin. We took Arthur to Southampton where he left us & we returned to Cowes as aforesaid– We sat on deck till nearly 12. | |
