6 August 1862 — Cowes
Wednesday. 6th [August 1862]. We went to bathe, had coffee at 7½. After breakfast as it was very rough it was decided that some should go to Carrisbrooke. Montie, FEB & Uncle B, myself went ashore leaving Cecil & IBG to see a race which was to take place that day. We saw Maria, Mss of Ailesbury at the Gloster Hotel & she flounced about in a most absurd manner. We then went to the Fountain Hotel where we hired a carriage and we went off to Carrisbrooke Castle. We then changed horses and went on to Freshwater—to the Plumbley Hotel & had luncheon. While lunch was cooking we had a saunter on the beach. We saw Mr Cameron walking up and down his garden but did not speak to him– At 4 we started for Cowes and got back to the Lark at about 8½ for dinner– I was able to dine with the rest and we were very merry– It rained a good deal in the eveng.
