7 August 1862 — Cowes
Thursday. 7th [August 1862]. When we woke we found it was blowing great guns and that it wd be impossible to sail an inch where as the day before Ivor & Cecil went for a short sail—so after bathing & having breakfast we landed, went to the Fountain and got a vehicle to go to Shanklin—no sooner had we started than it began to rain hard & as our fly was an open one it was all we could do to keep dry– Uncle B, who was on the box got rather wet as his umbrella was nearly inside out and so we stopped at the 1st inn at Newport where we got dried and bought mackintoshes. Having been detained 1½ hr we started afresh and reached Shanklin at about 3– We went to a very pretty inn (I forget the name) & whilst luncheon was preparing we went all about the Chine & got some photographs of it. After luncheon we decided upon going to Bonchurch and upon telling the driver to go there he refused to go—after some fuss he went on but at such a snails pace that Monty (who had a deal of altercation with him) made us get out and get another fly. We then drove thro’ a most lovely country to Bonchurch and to Ventnor but did not stop at either. We noticed Steeple Hill Castle, the Hambroughs’ & Appuldurcombe– Ventnor was lovely and the winding path up the side of the down with pretty white villas was as pretty a view as I had ever seen. We got back to Cowes at about 8½—and found everyone very impatient for dinner.
