25 August 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Monday. 25th [August 1862]. Blanche’s birthday. At 2 oclock we started for Parkston. I & Temmie in the sociable. We had quite a John Gilpin scene at the door as people came running after us with the cakes & tea wh we had left behind. We picked up Mrs & Lilly Pyne and May Ponsonby. When we got to Parkston we all bathed, we got Lord S. Osbornes bathing house opened for us– Just as we were going to bathe says I to Mrs Pyne “If any men come here throw stones at them and send them away”– Upon a tall thin man with a white calico hat coming on the shore Mrs Pyne said to me “Shall I drive that man away.” “Oh yes! I said besides he must be a maniac.” All of a sudden Lady Louisa Ponsonby says Oh that is S.G.O.” who very irate was enquiring who was intruding upon his house– We soon made our peace with him & he was very kind and civil– We then went up and had tea in his garden– Whilst we were there Mr John Walter one of the proprietors of “The Times” arrived to speak with S.G.O.—but as he was gone out sailing with Mr Ponsonby he was obliged to return without seeing him– Miss Osborne & her father walked with us to our carriages and I drove Mrs Pyne home in the poney carriage. We got home at 8– I read in the evening– Letter from Blossett.
