27 November 1862 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Thursday. 27th [November 1862]. I, Maria & the M. drove over to Blackheath to see old Mrs Layard. We got there in time for luncheon & drove in the open carriage. We had a splendid lunch & stayed & talked to Mrs L until 4½. She promised to come & stay with us after Christmas. We drove home and just near the new Wandsworth church the carriage was suddenly illuminated with what we found to be a bright blue meteor and coachman said he saw it burst. It was so bright as to dim the moon close to wh it passed and wh was shining brightly at the time. On arriving home we found Mr Layard—who had come to dine & spend the night. He told us a great deal about Spurgeon & the lecture in the tabernacle which he had attended a few days before– In the eveng we played to him– Constance slept with me.
