17 December 1862 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Wednesday. 17th [December 1862]. Practised in the morng & went to town at 1½. Ordered a hat at Heaths. Went to the Brunswick but as they were out we went on to Marshall & Snelgrove the first people I saw there were Fanny & Alice. They then took me in their carriage & we had a drive round the Park—then went to the hotel & I sent in to Mrs Arkwright a bouquet I had got fm Mr Doxat. Sat with the girls while they wrote letters & I also wrote to Car. We went up to tea in Mr J. Ark:’s sitting room & at 5½ they sent me in their carriage to Portland Place. When I got there I found Kate had left for Ampthill so I had to dine down. Con: dined upstairs with Blossett. I sat between Mr Underdown & Mr Scott Gifford– Besides Maria & Rd there were Mr & Mrs Johnson (she was the late Chancellor Campbell’s daughter) & Mr Woodhouse. I hardly spoke all dinner time. After dinner Molly & Mr Underdown sang. He has a very good voice—& we played– I had some fun with Bloss: & Mr Gifford. We got home at 1 & dropped Maria at Ashburton Cottage where they are spending the 1st night.
