24 December 1862 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Wednesday. 24th [December 1862]. Temmie went off to see her mother– We went down to 1.30 train. Williams was to have gone to see us off (the M. & Schr drove in direct in poney carriage) but the cab going off in a hurry we were obliged to take up the footman—when W. wanted to get inside—I was indignant but did not allow it– At Waterloo they were such a time getting our luggage that we had hardly time to get to the Gt Northern in time for 2.45, we were just in time, found the M waiting for us– At Peterboro there was also another train stopping along side of us. We heard someone tapping against our window & on letting it down found the B.’s & Milord were in the slow train which was waiting to let us (the express) pass & oddly eno’ were drawn up so close to the B’s that they recognised us & we were able to hold a little conversation with them– We got to Tallington 20 min. before the rest and also saw Mr Reg: Welby–
