10 January 1863 — Uffington House, nr. Stamford, Lincolnshire
Saturday. 10th [January 1863]. We were so late that I had only time to put on my bonnet and have breakfast before we left. We stopped at Peterboro’ and leaving the maid and luggage at the Station went to Orton for lunch. We found them pretty well & Lord Huntly particularly so having been out hunting 2 days before. Aunt Mary was low not having recovered the loss of the baby—she was kind and affectionate to me– We arrived at Roehampton at about 8 oclock & found Mrs H. P. J. Layard & Leo added to the party. I had a game of backgammon with Mrs Layard & went off to bed–
