28 February 1863 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Saturday. 28th February [1863]. As soon as I got up I had to dress for court. I had a white tulle skirt & peach coloured train & bouquet of white primroses & lilac crocuses– Connie was all in white & the M. in black. We went in the coach and had 2 footmen. The Pynes all came up to see us dressed. We got in to the Palace in very good time & in fact were amongst the first. Schr went with us– We had to wait for nearly 2 hours & then the doors were opened & we were allowed to go to the Presence chamber. The Pss Frederick William held the drawing room for the Queen– I made my curtsey to the Pss and was making one to the Prince of Wales when he in a most gracious way shook hands with me—having done the same to the M. We stayed a minute at the entrance of the Presence chamber talking to Lord & Lady Palmerston and then passed to the next room where we stood to see the people pass. We saw Lady Holmesdale & many others whom we knew. We went down at ¼ 4 to get our carriage but did not get it till very late. We spoke to Miss K & Blanche who were in the dressmakers gallery. We went first to Merthyrs rooms to get some refreshment & then drove home—undressed, had some tea & practised till dinner time– Soon went to bed– Schr brought Blanche from town & Miss K went to Norwood to see her friends–
