2 December 1863 — Dowlais House, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan
Wednesday. 2nd [December 1863]. Breakfast at 10. Directly after we went to the foundry to see the process of iron casting. The impressions were made with wooden models in the sand; a small passage from the furnace to the impressions conveyed the molten iron wh was liquid & red hot. They thro’ sand over till the things cast were cool & then conveyed them away. We looked in at the forge & carpenters shop & as it was blowg gt guns I then returned & wrote letters till lunch. I had a long talk with Mr Clark in his room. I again wrote letters till 3 when Mrs Clark, Connie & the M returned, when the M. gave me some more letters to write. We began a 4 game of billiards but Mr Thomas went out in the middle of it. Mr & Mrs Griffiths Lewellyn arrived at abt 5– We had T & sat and talked till dressing time. Mr & Mrs Griffiths (the rector of Merthyr) and Mr Menelaus dined. I played backgammon with Mr Thomas. And there were 2 gt games of billiards in the last of wh I played with Mr Menelaus against Schr & Mrs Clark– Bed at 12–
