3 December 1863 — Dowlais House, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan
Thursday. 3rd [December 1863]. Very late for breakfast. We went to the schools with Mr & Mrs G. Llewellyn & Mr Clark & returned abt 12½. I tried to set the sewing machine right wh occupied me till lunch. During lunch there came on a heavy hailstorm wh lasted till eveng. I, the M, Mrs Clark & Mrs Lewellyn went to Merthyr in the close carriage. We dropt the M. at the small schools and went for a drive past Merthyr. The storm being at this time very heavy we turned homewards and sat talking in the drawg room & had T. till dressing time. We had dinner at ¼ to 7 and afterwards Mrs Clark & I went to the Memorial to the Sewing class where there were abt 32. We only stayed there a few mins & then went on to the schools where we joined the M. and Connie—and we had a concert. The volunteer band in full red uniform—and the pupil teachers and many of the girls & men in the works sang with the usual success of the Welsh singers. There were several solos—songs—solo on the piccoli—on the drums and piccolo by a small boy—glees etc—Connie played one piece & I sang “Castles in the Air” under the superintendence of Mr Menelaus. We returned home at 10½ Mr Menelaus escorting us. I played a game of billiards with Mr Thomas & went up at 11½.
