Saturday. 5th [December 1863]. Rather late for breakfast. A pouring wet day. After breakfast we played devil on 2 clubs for some little time and then parlour croquet wh with work lasted till lunch. The Gentlemen notwithstanding the weather went out shooting & returned abt 5 regularly wet thro’. In the afternn Amy Dillwyn & I played duets and she showed me her trousseau. I had a game of bagatelle patience with Harry Dillwyn. After tea Connie played till dressing time. I dressed 1st & we had Essie in our room. The Hussey Vivians dined but Capt. Franklin took me in. There also dined Mr & Mrs Biddulph and Mr O. Mansel who is an extraordinary man & came late to dinner. He sleeps by day turng night into day. We had a game of vingt et un and I went partner with Capt Franklin & we both cheated & roared over it. It was a most amusing game. To bed at 12. Miss Dillwyn was showing me & Connie some wedding presents in the cupboard in the passage when Mr L. Thomas & Capt. Franklin came up & the latter (being 6’5¼) seized Miss Dillwyns bonnet & putting it on strutted abt with it in a most complacent manner at wh we all roared until the M. comg out of her room dispersed us. | |
