13 October 1864 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Thursday. 13th October 1864. Susan Hambro & I were rather late for Breakfast & found Mr Flamanck & Monty waiting for us. We have meals in the smoking room. After breakfast we sat in the study and humbugged about working the telegraph & assisting at the trimming of a hat wh Susan was doing for me. We lunched at ½ past 2 and directly after went for a drive in the phaeton with Monty. We went 1st to the Keepers to order some game & fruit to be sent to Blanche at Freshwater & then we went to Kinson where I called on Mr Driscoll abt a cook for Kate. We then drove on to Bournemouth & were there ½ hour. We went into the reading room & bought a few books—strolled on the pier & then returned. We got home just in time for dinner. In the eveng we sat in the study & spouted poetry. Mr Flamanck repeated whole scenes from Shakespear & chapters from the Bible. We retired at abt 12 but I & Susan sat up a long time as I acted & jumped abt a long time keeping Susan in roars. Letters received. From Kate: H. St Quentin & Miss K. Letters written Blanche & Kate.
