14 October 1864 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Friday. 14th [October 1864]. We descended rather late. After breakfast I wrote some letters & my journal & then joined Monty & S.H. in the hall where they were singing. I sat & listened to him sing while Susan played the accompaniments & Monty chose a lot of my songs. We had luncheon at ¼ to 1 and Monty went off by the 1.30. He is gone to town & then goes to his yacht to cruise in the Clyde. After lunch we wrote some letters & then Susan & I went out in the carriole, S. driving– When we got ½ way up the new drive S. made me understand that the poney was running away so I turned round & helped to tug at the reins & we managed to stop the animal when S got out & altered the bit. We went on to the Poole road & up the Plantation Road to see Mrs Pennington who has just lost her husband. We then called at Mrs Pynes & findg her out went home to T. We had mushrooms for T.—in the middle of T. the telegraph worked wh turned out to be Connie who with the M. & Schrei: had just returned from Pt Eliot. We sent vehicles to meet them but the M. walked. When Connie arrived we [passage in author’s shorthand]. We dined in the smoking room & in the eveng I sang a little & played backgammon with Susan & Con: played chess with Mr Flamanck, we retired pretty early & I [two lines in shorthand]. When I came to bed I found S. in bed & after humbugging abt a little I retired to my downy. We had a great deal of talk about some theatricals S. intends getting up at Milton in the winter.
