26 October 1864 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Wednesday. 26th [October 1864]. Constance & I started at 11 to go to St Giles in the brougham with Monty’s horses. We got there at about ¼ to 1 and Conty Ashley met us in the hall. We saw Ld & Lady Shaftesbury & then the girls took us up to their rooms. Constance & Conty went out & I sat with Vea in her room talking. She gave me a pair of hair pins from Italy. At 2 we went to lunch & Con: told the girls abt her engagement to Capt. Eliot. Mr D’Azeglio is staying at St Giles & Ld & Lady H. Ashley besides 3 cousins the Henry Ashley’s whom we call the military cousins being a young ma’ & 2 old daughters who think of nothing but the army. After lunch Vea took me over the house wh is very large & 1 wing is quite empty & not furnished– The house outside is anything but pretty. Mr D’Azeglio played to us & then Connie played & everybody went out except Con: Vea, Conty & myself. We staid at home & chatted. At 5 they came in & we had T. Mr D’A: gave me his photograph & at 5.15 we departed. When we came home we found Capt. Eliot had arrived at ½ past 5 & I saw him for the 1st time. He was very shy– The dinner being very heavy & Capt. E being shy made every one else so, so I talked vigourously all dinner time & generally made a fool of my self for the good of the company. In the evening we had a great deal of playing & singing & I went to bed at 11 with a sigh of relief.
