29 October 1864 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Saturday. 29th [October 1864]. I practised in the morng & played croquet with Miss K. At ¼ to 2 the whole party came over from St Giles, Lady S., Vea, Conty & Eda, Mr D’Azeglio, Lady B. Egerton, the Hon. J. Stuart Wortley & Evelyn Ashley & Lord Ashley. They drove & Lord S. & the Dowr, Dowr Lady Allesmere rode. She made an awful jug of herself with a mushroom hat tied over her weeds. After lunch we went to the Nineveh & then to see the kitchen whence we proceeded to the printing room & explained the whole process– We went then to the racquet Ct & showed off the telegraph. Con: came there in the carriole and every one had a drive in it by turns & then at abt 5 every one departed. We had T. & I came up & wrote till dinner. Before I got up in the morng the M. sent for me to her room to catch a moth wh I find to be the one I have been trying to catch all the summer—the Humming bird or bee-moth which is somewhat rare. (Got the news of Müller’s sentence to death).
