15 December 1864 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Thursday. 15th December 1864. It was a very dark morng and at 9 oclock scarcely light therefore I was late and not down till past 10. Had a letter from FEB. The M. at breakfast showed me her letters amongst wh was one from Aunt Mary asking the M. & Schrei with one girl to go for a shooting party wh I declined going to. I wrote letters and played over some songs and had long discussions abt the Orton visit till lunch. We expected Alice Ward to spend the day but she did not come. After lunch I sat with Grannie Layard & Blanche talking till Maria came in with the children– As the others went out I took Dacre & Alice to Mrs Cornock & then played duets out of Lucretia Borgia & L’Elesir d’Amore with the M to Mrs Layard. At 5 we had tea in the schoolroom & I toasted the cake for T. and played with the children. I then went & sat with Grannie for ½ hour in her room. In the eveng Con: played & Blanche played chess with Mr Flamanck & I copied music. When Con: was gone to bed I sang till bed time & left Mr Flamanck reading about “Mr Boffin”–
