16 December 1864 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Friday. 16th December [1864]. Down shortly after ten & then wrote letters. Mr Somes came with his fiddle and played all the morng with the M. I went up to the schoolroom for some little time. Maria came over in the morng. Blanche & the M, Grannie and Temmie went to London & I went over to luncheon with Maria. Then I played and sang to the children till nearly 4 when I & Maria walked to call on Mrs Somes & into Roehampton. It was bitterly cold so we came straight home and worked till tea time. After T the children came down & I played with them at “tea parties” and I ran home. The M. sent for me to her bed room to see what she had done for me in town—a lovely looking glass in a glass nob frame & a locket set to choose from. I then went & spoke to Capt. Eliot (who arrived at 5) and dressed for dinner. Maria & Rd came to dinner & were rather late. I talked a good deal to Rd in the eveng & took him up to see the looking glass and then to my room where we found a cameo wh he is going to exchange with me. When we got back to the drawing room we found Maria gone home. I offered Connie the glass which she accepted. Bed at 11–
