6 January 1865 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Friday. 6th [January 1865]. I tried to get Miss K. to help me with my bills but after waiting about a long time I went down to my room to answer a rather annoying [passage in author’s shorthand] from FEB and had to finish it after lunch– I was writing when Mr Flamanck came to tell me that Arthur was here. I went to the dining room & found him with Miss K. & Blanche. He called on his way to town from the Christeng of the Horace Chapmans’ infant– I finished my letter [passage in author’s shorthand] Gran: & then took my work to sit with her. We sat talking till we suddenly heard a bell so we went to dress for the theatre & had dinner at 5. Gran:, Con:, Blan: & I went in the sociable & the M., Schrei: & Miss K. came in a brougham. We went to the Olympic & found H. Layard already there. We saw “The Hidden Hand” in which Kate Terry is the principal actress & it was followed by “Cupid & Pysche” by Burnand. There is one beautiful scene in this representing “Love in the roses” which is done by a quantity of tiny children all dressed in white with pink roses on their heads. After the play we went to 130 Piccadilly & had supper with Henry where we expected to find Arthur but he never appeared and we went home & got to bed a little after 2–
