7 January 1865 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Saturday. 7th [January 1865]. I applied myself to my bills and I wrote the cheques & arranged them with Miss Kemble which took me till lunch. Maria came in to lunch & brought Alice & we also expected Alice Ward but she never came. After lunch the M. went to town & I sat in the schoolroom with Grannie and when every one came in she & I retired to her room and then she told me all about herself when she was young & all the history of her courtship & marriage until tea. After T. Blan: & Con: sang and Maria came in & Mr Flamanck returned from London. Mr Somes brought his fiddle & all the eveng he & the M. played Beethoven & Mozart (squeaky & slow). B. & Mr Flamanck played chess– Mr Layard & Miss Kemble played backgammon & I worked hard to finish Ivor’s waistcoat which I did.
