1 January 1867 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Tuesday. 1st January 1867. The New Year came in while I was listening for the Wimborne bells. Bee asleep & snoring provokingly. The M. also gone to bed and as I afterwards found on enquiry also snoring. I heard the Wimborne bells most distinctly and after a short time went to sleep. Only us 3 in the house Ivor gone to Margam– Got up at 9. After breakfast I worked and learnt some of Morte d’Arthur, Bee & I sat in the morning room– Bee read me 20 pages of Lecky’s Rationalism and at ½ past twelve we took a walk together round by the Queens walk & home by village. We tried to teach the pug “Chloe” to stay “at heel,” wh was great pain for all parties—man & beast– Lunch at 1. After lunch I drove out in the brougham with the M. Called at Uddens (Greathed), Kingston Lacy & Garlands but found none at home. Then called on Portmans at Deans Ct and there met Mr & Lady L. Ponsonby and Mrs & Miss Venables. Home to 5 oclock tea and I then sat & read some of Irvings Columbus to Bee– Wrote letters. Dinner at 7. At ½ past 8 I walked up to the Pynes with my maid Hill & man with a light. Found besides the Pynes the Ponsonbys & a Miss Wordley. Sang in the eveng glees etc. When I went up there was a sharp frost. But when Mr Pyne opened the door at abt 12 to walk me home we discovered there was abt ½ ft of snow on the ground, found the M. up but Bee gone to bed. Went quickly to bed to take off wet boots &c.–
