2 January 1867 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Wednesday. 2nd [January 1867]. Got up at 9. After break: practised for ½ hour and then went to morng room with Bee. We learnt some Morte d’Arthur and Bee read 20 pages of Lecky– Lunch at 1. After lunch I read Columbus out to Bee in the morning room and then we soon found that the fire not being fixed it was too cold to sit there. Therefore we retired to Bee’s bedroom & had 5 T there. It snowed hard all the morning but cleared up and we had a little sunshine in the afternoon. Wrote letters after T. till 7 dinner. After dinner I read 2 chap: of Mugby Junction and went to bed at 11. Chloe gave us great trouble being very ill all night from eating some of the printing rollers. It was very cold indeed.
