3 January 1867 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Thursday. 3rd [January 1867]. Breakfast in bed and it was so cold I asked for a fire to get up by. Bee sat here while I dressed and I repeated to her what I knew of Morte d’Arthur. We afterwards sat in her bed room and learnt some more of it and then Bee read 30 pages of Lecky. Lunch at 1. Afterwards I heard Bee sing a little and then read two chapters of Columbus & helped Bee with the heel of her stocking. At 4 I wrapt up and trudged out with “Bessie” & “Chloe.” Went first to Miss Clewell & gave her up for Miss K. Called at the Pynes door to enquire how her cold was. Went to the Ponsonbys—visited with them abt ½ hour. Mr Ponsonby tells me that the thermometer was down at 12 last night. 30 in the sun today and 17 at 5 this afternoon. On my way home enquired how Emma Baker was, called at Mrs Meabys for some peppermints—enquired how old Mrs Patey was—looked in at Mrs Allen at the Lodge & gave her 5/ for Vea Ashley. Home to 5 T. in Bees room & got afternoon post. Wrote letters, sent cheques & talked a good deal to Luff so was late for dinner. After d. I read out a good bit more of Mugby Junction and finished the eveng with a little practise of piano. Monty is expected by mail train tonight. His servant reports the streets of London to be in an awful state & sheets of ice. Most of the cabs obliged to have 2 horses & the charges a guinea or 30/ to go any small distances; traffic nearly entirely stopt.
