7 January 1869 — Uffington House, nr. Stamford, Lincolnshire
Thursday. 7th January [1869]. After lunch I was tired & went to lie down. Felicia took some of the Guests out driving & Henry went with them– When they came in Felicia looked into my room & said, Oh Mr Layard is in the small boudoir & wants you to go & have a talk with him– I said I would go & I got up & went down feeling what was coming. I stayed talking to him till poor Uncle Lindsey came to call us to tea twice—the time had passed so quickly—how much had happened in so short a space—for Henry & I were engaged to be married– Aunt Mary came over from Orton for the ball & she at once guessed by Henry’s face what had happened but we had to keep it secret until Mama had been told– We went to the Stamford ball that eveng but Henry & I could not manage to go in the same carriage. I danced a little but seemed all the eveng as in a dream.
