21 March 1869 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Sunday. 21st [March 1869]. Wet again & we did not attempt to get to church. Henry fell upon a book on Mr Rate’s table wh greatly interested him; it was the private letters of Ld Aberdeen & others published for private circulation by Arthur Gordon. While he was intent on this Mrs Grote & Lady Eastlake were announced having driven over to see us in spite of the driving rain & wind. Hy showed Mrs G. the book in wh she soon became absorbed & from wh she could scarcely tear herself. After ten they set off home & Hy spent the rest of the eveng over the book & I employed the time in reading the last pages of Rassam’s “Narrative of Abyssinia.”
