Saturday. 3rd [April 1869]. Unpacked all morng. Lunch at 1.30 & Hy came home. At 2 he & I went driving first to National Gallery to meet Boxall as Hy had to arrange with him abt the re-hanging of his pictures. To Phillips where he bought me an opal ring. To call at the Deanery. We found Lady A. Stanley at home. To Salviati where we chose glass & met Messrs Rate & Drake & to call on Mrs Rate. When we came in I sat in my little Boudoir & rested till dinner when we went to dine at Lady Duff Gordon’s in Hertford St. Sir Alexr D.G. took me down to dinner; besides the 2 Miss D:G.’s there were Lord Berry, Mr Ferguson, Mr & Mrs Coope & Mrs Egerton (widow). Lady D.G: was not well eno’ to be at dinner but we found her in the drawing room. We left early & went in to see Lady Wm Russell who sent us a fine bust of Homer today. Found there the old Dss of Cleveland, the Arthur Russells & Hastings Russell, Lady Honoria Cadogan & Sir J. & Lady Harrington. Very dull affair as no one cd enjoy Lady Wm on acct of the stupid old Dss. We soon went home. | |
