19 August 1869 — Brieg
Thursday. 19th [August 1869]. Woke better but breakfasted in bed & got up at 10. We had intended riding up the Bel Alp but it was impossible as it rained in torrents all the morng. Henry came up & told me Profr Tyndal had arrived at this hotel. At 2 it cleared and we thought we would go up the Bel Alp & Tyndal said he would follow us on foot in an hour. We packed—arranged to leave Hill here for a night and I actually mounted the mule when it came on to rain again & I dismounted. The rain did not last very long so we took a stroll with Professor T. on the Simplon road as far as the first bridge across the mountain stream. We then came back. This is a picturesque curious town. It consists of several large quaint houses. One has towers with round balls on the top & is the remains of an old ecclesiastical building with cloisters towers &c. It is not quite in ruins but seems to be occupied by some of the poor people of the place. It turned out a lovely evening and we had from our room a lovely view of the mountains, glaciers, Bel Alp Hotel &c (At the table d’hôte we met 2 friends of Professor T’s, Mr Mathew & Mr Ridley 2 of the Alpine Club, the latter is making a map of Mount Blanc. We met them at the Bel Alp on Friday not Thursday.)
