18 August 1869 — Chillon
Wednesday. 18th [August 1869]. We left Chillon by 8 o’cl: train and were most sorry to leave the snug little Hotel with a lovely view of mountains & another right up the lake to Geneva and the quiet of the place. We went thro’ lovely scenery up the valley of the Rhone to Sierre. There was the railway terminus. We had secured at Lausanne the whole of the coupé (as we thought) but there turned out to be 3 places & so we had an unfortunate Irishman stuck in with us wh was a bore & rather hot. When Henry had done expostulating with the conductor in vociferous French, the Irishman, who took him for some infuriated French count began feebly to apologize in broken French “Je suis beaucoup faché—et je parle tres pas-mais.” He appeared relieved when Hy declared himself English & was very quiet & inoffensive. He left us at Visp & then some one else was put in. The whole valley we went thro’ seemed very desolate & the Rhone & mountain currents seemed to have done their best to destroy the efforts at cultivation. We reached Brieg at abt 4 by wh time I was very tired and had a bad headache. Table d’hote at 6 but after soup I was obliged to leave the table & go & lie down & I soon went to bed as I was very unwell. Slept pretty well.
