17 August 1869 — Chillon
Tuesday. 17th [August 1869]. When we got up in the morng abt 9 we found it was lovely & that we could see the tops of the Dent du Midi thro’ the clouds. After breakfast we went out & took Hill with us to see the Castle. A woman showed us all over the dungeons; oubliettes, duke & Dss’ rooms & Halle des Chevaliers wh is a very fine room with a massive wood ceiling and having the arms of the different knights painted all round the room—these however are fast being obliterated by damp & age. We sent Hill to take a walk in the Hills and went in & wrote letters till 2 o’cl: Table d’hôte. We sat on the balcony & had coffee in the afternoon & at 5 we went for a walk in the hills and managed to get up a good way & then came down by a rough narrow little road in the valley. We had tea at 7 and then sat out all the evening on the balcony. Bed at 9. Hill said she had not much enjoyed her walk of the morng on acct of the lizards and the rattle of the snakes! wh she put down the chirp of grasshoppers to be.
