21 August 1869 — Brieg
Saturday. 21st [August 1869]. Henry woke me up at 5 to see the sun rise. It was very fine over the Weisshorn & Matterhorn. Went to sleep again & got up at 7. Very much off my feed at breakfast. Went and sat out & talked to the Profr. Most of the people at the Hotel set off to take different excursions. I tried to walk with Hy as far as a little lake near the Bel Alp but found I could not get so far. Professor T. joined us & he & Hy went on to the lake while I sat down & waited & then we went back. The Professor lent me a Vol of Browning’s poems so I laid on the bed & read them while Hy wrote. At 1 we had some lunch and then set off on the return to Brieg. Hy walked and I was carried by 2 men in a chaise à porteur and we took a 3rd man with us to carry the luggage and to relieve the other 2 of carrying me. They went a tremendous pace & Hy found it impossible to keep up with them. We halted for ½ hour ½ way as we did going up and got down to the Hotel d’Angleterre at abt 5. We found Hill there. Dined at 6 and met at dinner Mr & Lady Mary Egerton and their daughter of abt 16 and a boy of 14. Had a very pleasant dinner. The Egertons had just arrived & were going up the Bel Alp the next day.
