31 August 1869 — Milan
Tuesday. 31st [August 1869]. Hill not better or my cough. Hy determined to call a Dr. He found that Mme Bruschetti was very clever & she came & prescribed for us. Before I got up she made me put on a linseed poultice & gave Hill also some medicines & put her to bed again. She very kindly helped me to dress & do my hair but I found when up I could not go out, not being well eno’. Henry went out to see if he could find any lace but returned saying Mme Arrigoni had nothing worth having. He brought me a book “Eothen” to read. I stayed in the salon all day and at 7 was glad to tumble into bed & Mme B brought me another poultice & some more messes for my cold and said she thought Hill better. In the night we had a threatening of a storm a good deal of rain and lightning when Hill played her old trick up on us by rushing to the door & waking us up to know if she might open her windows. We shrieked “No go to bed” but our peace of the night was gone once disturbed. Excessively tired of Hill. She will make no effort.
