2 September 1869 — Milan
Thursday. 2nd [September 1869]. Hill better. My cold still bad. After breakfast I dressed to go out & we walked to the Duomo and took another look round. We then went to the Brera to see the pictures. We enquired for Sigr Bertini at his studio. Did not find him but his assistant let us in & showed us some old pictures they had to restore. We then went on to the gallery but we could see very little as the rooms were occupied by the modern Exn and the old pictures were mostly hidden up & some rooms closed. We however saw the Finding of Moses by Bonifazio. Three portraits by Lorenzo Lotto wh Henry had once wished to obtain for Ivor but wh he thought Sir C. Eastlake wished to buy for the Gallery. Eventually they were bought by the King and given to the Brera– Two Moronis and the great Raffaelle & I saw for the first time my favourite picture of the Entombment of S. Catherine. These are all I remember. Not feeling well I did not wish to see any more sights so we went for a drive as far as the Triumphal Arch and round by the Amphitheatre a good distance round the boulevard that runs round the town to a place where Henry paid a visit to an old Italian lady a friend of his. I did not go with him & when he returned we went home. I then rested for a couple of hours. I had dinner sent up to me. After dinner Henry determined to call in the Dr. So Sigr Capelli came & prescribed for both me & Hill. Henry went out in the eveng to get the medicines.
