4 September 1869 — Milan
Saturday. 4th [September 1869]. We determined to leave Milan and go to Verona. At abt 10 we left but Henry & I got out of the train at Brescia to spend 3 hours there & sent Hill on with the luggage to Verona. We took a carriage and drove first to the church of San Francesco where we saw an alterpiece by Romanino over the high altar and in a small chapel a fine Moretto. From there we went to the church of SS Nazaro e Celso which has over the high altar a very fine Titian. There was a grand festa going on & the picture was hidden however they did uncover it for us and we saw it tho’ with a very bad light. Then we went to San Giovanni Evangelista where are several Morettos & seven frescos by Romanino. Here I saw what is either the copy or the replica of a picture Ivor has at Canford “The Marriage of the Virgin” by Romanino. From there we went to S. Clemente where Moretto is buried where we saw five of his paintings. We then went to the Museum which one enters thro’ the ruins of an old Roman temple. The lower part of the columns, the steps & pavement are very perfect. In the museum is the bronze figure of Victory which is wonderfully perfect & very beautiful and larger than life size. We then went to the Galleria Tosio where there are a great many fine pictures & from there to the Palazzo Fevaroli. We were told the family were at home but after some demur we were let in and saw some very fine portraits by Moroni & Moretto and a beautiful Savoldo. After this we drove to the Station and went on to Verona to the Albergo delle due Torri kept by Barbesi where we found Hill in a state having lost Henry’s hat box. It turned up all right next morning.
